4 Types of Support Every Business Owner Actually Needs (And Probably Doesn't Have Yet)
You Didn't Build This Business to White-Knuckle It Alone
There's a version of entrepreneurship that gets romanticised a lot: the lone visionary, working from her kitchen table, grinding through the hard days until success arrives. It sounds inspiring, but in practice, it's a fast track to burnout and misery.
The business owners who genuinely thrive—who pay themselves well, who grow without losing their minds, who actually enjoy what they've built—aren't doing it alone. They've built a support system around themselves that catches them when things get hard and pushes them forward when things get good.
If you're running on fumes and sheer determination right now, this one's for you. Here are the four types of support that make the biggest difference for Alberta business owners.
1. A Mastermind Group or Business Buddy Circle
Mentorship gives you wisdom from someone further along the path. A mastermind or business buddy circle gives you something different: solidarity, sharp thinking, and real accountability from people in the trenches right alongside you.
About a year ago, I created a small Mastermind group out of my Fast Track to Sustainable Profits group with several other highly motivated and inspiring women entrepreneurs. Some of us show up every week without fail; others drop in when they can. But what we've built together is something genuinely hard to replicate on your own: a space where we can talk through real challenges without putting a brave face on it, celebrate genuine wins without feeling like we're bragging, and sit down and actually work alongside people who understand exactly what it means to be building something from the ground up.
We work through business challenges together, share what's working, and hold each other accountable in the best way possible. No judgement or competition; just real people doing hard things and choosing not to do it alone.
This kind of community fills a gap that family, friends, and even coaches often can't. The people who love you most want to protect you, but a good business community wants to grow you.
If you don't have something like this in your life yet, look for local business networking groups, industry associations, or even informal communities online. Form your own group or find one you can join. The right people will push you and cheer for you in equal measure, and the combination of those two things is more powerful than most business owners expect.
2. A VA or Assistant Who Frees You from the Small Stuff
Here's an honest question: how much of your workweek is spent on tasks that genuinely require you? I’ve realized over the past year how much time I’ve been spending away from the tasks that really need my personal attention.
Scheduling, inbox management, posting on social media, following up on invoices, updating your calendar: these things matter, but they don't need your specific expertise. They just need to be done. And when you're the one doing all of them, you're not spending your time on the work that actually moves your business forward.
A virtual assistant (VA) or part-time support person is often one of the highest-leverage investments a small business owner can make. When I finally brought on a VA to handle the tasks that were quietly consuming my days, it created real breathing room. I finally had space to focus on clients, strategy, and the work I actually love doing.
It doesn't have to be a full-time hire or a big expense. Many fantastic VAs work on a part-time or project basis, making it a very manageable entry point for most small businesses.
The goal isn't to hand off responsibility. It's to protect your time for the things only you can do.
3. A Mentor or Business Coach Who's Already Where You Want to Be
There's a difference between advice from someone who thinks they know what you're going through and guidance from someone who has actually navigated what you're facing.
A good mentor or business coach compresses your learning curve. They help you avoid the mistakes they already made, spot the blind spots you can't see from where you're standing, and give you honest feedback that your friends and family simply aren't equipped to give you.
This doesn't mean you need to hire an expensive coach or join a high-ticket program right out of the gate if it doesn’t fit financially. Mentorship can look like a formal coaching relationship, but it can also be a connection with an experienced entrepreneur in your industry, or even a community of peers who hold each other accountable.
What it shouldn't look like is you making every single decision in a vacuum and learning everything the hard way.
Look for someone whose values align with yours, who has built something you genuinely respect, and who is willing to be honest with you even when it's uncomfortable. That kind of relationship, the one where someone pushes you forward because they actually believe in what you're building, is worth more than almost any tool, course, or strategy you'll ever invest in.
4. A Financial Partner Who Actually Gets It
Here’s one we’ve heard from clients time and time again: proper financial support from a partner who truly cares about your growth is worth… well, a lot. Both financially and emotionally.
This isn’t someone who files your taxes once a year and disappears. We're talking about a bookkeeper, accountant, or profit strategist who understands your business, keeps your numbers clean and current, and helps you make decisions based on real data, not gut feelings and crossed fingers.
When your finances are in order, everything else in your business gets easier. You know what you can afford to spend. You know how much to set aside for taxes. You know whether that big investment is realistic or just wishful thinking. And you stop waking up at 3 AM wondering if your business is going to survive.
The Profit First system is the thing that’s made the biggest difference for our clients. It flips the traditional approach on its head: instead of hoping there's something left over for you after expenses, you pay yourself first and build your business around what remains. It sounds counterintuitive, but it works every time.
If your current financial support is limited to a spreadsheet you update when you feel like it, it's time for a change. Our services at Elevation Accounting & Advisory are built for exactly this, giving you clarity, clean books, and a system that actually pays you.
You Don't Have to Have All Four Tomorrow
Building a real support system takes time. But it starts with an honest look at what you're currently missing, and a decision to stop trying to do everything alone.
Start with one. Financial clarity is often the most transformative first step, because when your money is sorted, everything else feels more manageable. When you're not constantly putting out financial fires, you have the mental space to invest in the other types of support that help your business grow.
If you're ready to find out what your numbers actually look like (and what they could look like with the right system in place) let's talk.
